Shiokara is a typical Japanese food of fermented marine animals in a concentrated salt solution. This fermented dough contains 10% salt, 30% sprout rice, wrapped in airtight packaging, then fermented for approximately one month.

Shiokara has a very sharp and distinctive taste and smell. Even just some Japanese people can enjoy this food, so known as one of chinmi, flavor rare. One way to consume is to eat directly in one swallow and followed by drinking whiskey. Therefore some bars in Japan provide this food. But it can also be eaten with rice like other typical Japanese food.
