bosintang - www.healthnote25.com |
Bosintang (보신탕) is a type of guk that
contains dog meat and also called gaejang or gaejangguk. Gaejangguk or gaejang
means "dog meat soup", while bosintang means "healthy
soup". Dogs that are taken for bosintang meat are nureongi, a dog that is
specially groomed for consumption.
Gaejangguk is specifically
consumed in the 6th month of the Korean calendar on Dog Day which is considered
the hottest day of the year. In the past to the present day, some Koreans
regard Dog Day as a hot fire element, based on the theory of yin and yang and 5
elements. Koreans believe that the element of fire must be opposed to the metal
element, which is contained in dog meat. On that day they will eat hot food until
it takes a lot of sweat.
Based on the book of ancient
medicine, dog meat soup is a dish that can increase stamina, strengthen the 5
vital organs and digestive system, and warm the waist and knees. In the past, a
married woman would carry dog meat and rice cakes as a gift to her parents.
