Osechi-ryōri (御
節
料理 ?,
osechi cuisine) is a dish prepared to mark the turn of the season, and is now
used to call a variety of special foods to celebrate the new year in Japan.
Often called osechi or shōgatsu-ryōri (正月
料理 ?,
new year cuisine).
New Year's food is neatly
arranged in a wooden box of tiles called jūbako (重
箱?).
In general, only side dishes are arranged in a wooden box that can be called
osechi cuisine. Wooden boxes for osechi cooking are believed to be a
multiplicity of fortune symbols.
