aerophobia - www.healthnote25.com |
Aerophobia
(from aero aerial, air or gas and phobos, fear) is a feeling of excessive fear
in the air or fear of flying, such as when boarding an air transport
(airplanes, hot air balloons, helicopters). Aerophobia is also called
pteromerhanophobia, aviofobia or aviatophobia.
This phobia is one of the
most common phobias that people suffer. This fear starts with anxiety, which
usually arises when traveling for business trips, hears news of accidents, sees
airplane accidents, even just by looking at air transport.
Symptoms of this anxiety
include nausea, vomiting, tremors, palpitations, hyperventilation, panic attacks,
sweating, and can get worse and thus require immediate medical treatment.
In 1980, a study
conducted by the Boeing Aviation Company showed that millions of people had
expressed fear when entering an aircraft. Phobias like this can be very
disturbing to life, especially for those who have to travel air in their work.
