Torantang is a kind of soup (tang) made from taro tuber (toran; Colocasia esculenta). Torantang is beneficial for health because it can smoothen the digestive function, therefore Seoul and Gyeonggi residents present it at Chuseok holiday, where many people eat other dishes in large portions.

Yeongnam residents (Gyeongsang) presents torantang for ancestral spirits ritual ceremony. In addition, Jeolla residents also have a torantang in their cuisine menu.

It is not known when the beginning of the taro plant was introduced to Korea or when the Korean people first consumed it.However, based on records from the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), such as Hyangyak gugeupbang ( 救急 , Compilation of the People's Treatment and Emergency Drugs, 1236), proved that taro had been consumed since the Goryeo Dynasty as a medicine.
