tinnitus -

Tinnitus is the ear of rings, rustling, or the kind of sound that seems to originate in the ear or head. In many cases it is not a serious problem, but a nuisance that eventually disappears. But rarely, tinnitus can represent serious health conditions.

It is not a single disease, but it is a symptom of the underlying condition. Nearly 36 million Americans suffer from this disorder. In almost all cases, only patients can hear the noise.
