The ego is a psychic structure that deals with the concept of self,
governed by the principle of reality and characterized by the ability to
tolerate frustration. EGO is governed by the principle of reality relating to
what is practical and possible, as the impulse of the id. The ego is bound in
the process of secondary thought-remembering, planning, and weighing situations
that allow compromise between the fantasies of the id and the reality of the
outside world. The ego lays the foundation for a conscious development of the
sense of self as a distinct individual.
