acidosis - www.healthnote25.com |
Acidosis is
the process of increasing acid levels in the blood or other body tissues. In
other words, there is a process of increasing the concentration of hydrogen
ions. This term refers specifically to the acid levels in the blood plasma.
The term
"acidemia" describes low blood pH levels, while "acidosis"
describes the process that results. However, these two terms are often used
interchangeably.
Acidosis occurs when the
serum pH is lower than 7.35 (except in the fetus, while the opposite,
alkalosis, occurs when the pH is higher than 7.45. Arterial blood gas testing
and other tests are required to separate the underlying cause.
The level of cellular
metabolic activity affects and at the same time is affected by the pH in body
fluids. In mammals, normal arterial blood pH ranges from 7.35 to 7.50 (while in
humans it ranges from 7.35 to 7.45). Changes in arterial blood pH beyond this
range can result in cell damage.
Some of the symptoms
associated with acidosis are headache, fatigue, tremor, drowsiness, asterixis
and large brain dysfunction that can trigger coma if not addressed immediately.
